Yr 9 Football 7 a-side Tournament – 17th March 09

Despite a couple of schools failing to turn up, Stratford performed brilliantly to end up finishing 2nd in the Group and qualifying for the finals next Thursday.

Stratford started slowly and lost the first game 1-0. The next game was the turning point and Stratford scored a brilliant team goal finished by Omar to take an early 1-0 lead against a strong Royal Docks team. Despite being under some pressure, Stratford held on for a deserved victory.

Stratford were then unlucky to draw with Langdon 0-0 despite controlling the game, which meant a draw in the last game would see them through. Stratford again scored a very good team goal, this time from Abid, only for some slack defending to let in a late equaliser. But a draw was all they needed and in achieving this, a place in the final was secured.

Team: Omar, Umar, Abid, Joe, Gurmel, Matthew, Hafeez, Abidur, Mo Y, Zuber and Amin
Star Man – Joe Singh

Stratford School v Rokeby – 11th March 09

It was to prove to be a very tough afternoon at the office for Stratford’s young superstars.
Unfortunately, they were completely outclassed by an experienced and well organised Rokeby team. The final score of 65-5 was however, very misleading as 58 of Rokeby’s points were scored by two of their players – two players who played throughout the whole game despite the large gap in the score line.

These two players were a different league to every player on the court and despite the brilliant effort of David ‘Big Dave’ O’Laoye to keep them in check, their skill levels shone through.

Stratford Team:
Abdul, David, Bilal, Aqib, Mustafa, Hasham, Usman, Fawaz, Fawzan
Star Man – David O’Laoye

Stratford School v Forest Gate – 12th March 09

Thursday 12th March will go down in history as a momentous day for Stratford School’s Under 12 basketball team. Against a team they had been beaten by quite easily only two months previously Stratford turned the form book on its head with a scintillating display of courage, speed and commitment. Daniel ‘Danny Boy’ O’Laoye rocked up after impressing during the Inter Tutor tournament, and along with Captain Marvel Abdul scored an impressive 6 points.

Each quarter was close, but Stratford ran out eventual winners 24-16.

Stratford School:
Abdul, David, Daniel, Tariq, Bilal, Hasham, Haamid, Usman, Fawaz, Fawzan

Over the last weekend both Kayla Anderson and Afusa Mukabaralisa of Year 9 compteted in the East London Mini-Maraton for a lpace in Newhams London Mini-Marathon squad.

This was Kayals first competitive race over the distance (just ove 2 miles) and managed to complete the course in good time despite seeing many competitiors fail to finish.

Afusa has taken part in long distance events before but has recently returned to competition and training following over a year on the sidelines.
Despite this Afusa managed to finish third of all Newham females and is hoping to up her training and performance to become a high class runner.

Both girls attend Newham and Essex Beagles Atheltics Club where they train with International stars such as Mo Farrah, the current European Gold Medalist over 3000m, Tyrone Edgar, Great Britain 100m Sprinter, Chris Tomlinson, Great Britain Long Jumper and Victoria Ohuruogu (sister of Christine Ohuruogu, Olympic and World 400m Champion)

Under 12 Basketball Report

It was Stratford’s first ever league game and it showed against a well oiled Cumberland side bursting with experience and talented players.
Despite working hard Stratford remained scoreless for the first two quarters – losing the first 14-0 and the being down 22-0 by half time.

Bilal Shahid and Abdul Gour demonstrated glimpses of talent and Tariq Sharif and Aqib Ali worked hard but they were no match for a couple of Cumberland players who had clearly played a lot before and were dominating the game scoring all but a couple of Cumberland’s points.

As Stratford got used to proper game play on a proper sized court they came into the game more and in the second half started to wear down the tiring Cumberland team. Startford’s first score was greeted with a triumphant cheer as Bilal swivelled beautifully to score half way through the third quarter. Stratford would go onto to score 3 more baskets in the fourth quarter to finish 48-8 losers but losing the fourth quarter by 8 points highlights the improvement they made throughout.

Well done boys!!

Stratford team:
Abdul Gour, Rohit Patel, Tariq Sharif, Bilal Shahid, Aqib Ali, Mustafa Majeed, Hasham Bashir, Fauzan Samad, Haamid Gaffoor, Usman Tahir, Fawaz Akhtar and Big Dave

Star Man – Abdul Gour

Year 7 Basketball

Lady luck was not shining on Stratford as they were named in the group of death alongside reigning champions St Bons and a well organised Forest Gate team.

It was Stratford’s first ever U12s game and it showed as it took most of the first game to get themselves organised. They were very well led by Abdul Gour who shone out as a player with a lot of potential and Bilal Shahid also proved a wise selection. Forest Gate were the first opponents and it finished in a very narrow defeat 3-0. Not exactly a basketball score but the effort and attitude from the players was superb and they improved a lot as the game progressed.

Next up was one of the best teams in the Country as they showed in the first game as they dismantled Forest Gate 27-0. Stratford had no need to worry though as they pulled out all the stops and showed a lot of fighting spirit and no little skill as they only went down 13-0.

There was a huge improvement as the tournament progressed and if they continue to improve at this rate they should be optimistic for the forth coming league fixtures.

Team:

Abdul Gour
Emmanuel Bunsa
Tariq Sharif
Bilal Shahid
Kudzai Rabvukwa
Aquib Ali
Hamza Saleem
Mustafa Maljee
Sameer Karin
Hasham Bashir
David O’laoye
